Hey there, WheelHeads! Happy Friday to you all!
I know it has been a while since you've heard from me, but I'm back to lead you into a long weekend full of fireworks, family, friends, and some much needed time off for the entire crew here at Wheelie!
With this week coming to close, I'm thinking about all that has happened over the course of the last year. Mainly thinking of exactly this time last year when I had just started working on the Spotted Bear Spirits project and all the collateral that came along with it. As I sit here, I'm looking at my desk and noticing that it is covered in liquor bottles from this particular project, as well as a huge stack of drawings that went into the making of each label on each bottle. It's satisfying to have the final, finished products sealed, pristine, and perfect right next to my computer.
The alcohol world is super competitive, especially for startups and micro-operations. We've worked with several clients in this industry and have received tons of praise for our ability to bring innovative and honest design and branding to make individual companies stand out in a crowded marketplace.
Let me explain.
We say bring it on! There's no package design or label that we are scared to take on. This is an industry that matches our design style of having fun! This is an industry that doesn't take itself too seriously. We are a good match for each other.
Yesterday, I was photographing the Spotted Bear Spirits lineup while telling Courtney, our project manager, how much we love projects where we get to draw by hand instead of with a computer. As all three bottles were lined up, I laughed about how Lisa and I have different drawing styles, but they go together really well.
My drawing style is really meticulous. I like to draw each line carefully and slowly and in the right place, free of smudges. And then there's Lisa, who can throw something together in under five minutes, and it looks amazing. I spend hours drawing draft after draft where each line has to be perfect, and Lisa somehow rolls in, says, "I'll help you!" and finds a dull pencil in the bottom of her backpack, busts out some artwork on the back of some random piece of paper, and her line work is totally out of control and smudged, but looks incredible.
Pop Quiz: Guess who drew which labels:
A: I drew the vodka and coffee liqueur, and Lisa drew the Spotted Bear Logo and the fish.
But our two styles go together really nicely because of the colors and typography and general spirit of Spotted Bear. We love this project!!
Another good alcohol project we busted out lately was the story of Kalispell Brewing. I know Maggie and Cole. I know beer. And I know that this is the perfect way to tell the story of their brewery. Watch it-- they're adorable. And the beer is delicious.
Well, Wheelheads, Happy 4th of July Weekend!
I hope you soar through the skies on the back of an eagle.
Be safe, and see you up there.
