By Amanda Guy - Our Designer
Hey there, Wheel Heads! A very Happy Friday to each and every one of you as we come to the end of yet another work week here at the WheelHouse.
It’s been a wonderful week full of adventures, a brand new hire here the office, meetings, branding, website edits, and so many layouts that I only see the world in text and grid lines. Secretly though, I love the tedious work of layouts. It’s a lot of fun to open up a new artboard and start something from scratch. Not that I don’t do that every day, but the way these things come together in the end is nothing short of exciting and a pure delight for nerds like myself.
THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF LAYOUTS
Here’s a great example of a layout I worked with for a long time, which we are very proud of here at Wheelie. We work with the Glacier National Park Conservancy a lot, and we tend to have several projects that incorporate little to a lot of copy and design in one. This is the President’s Report for the year 2015, and it began simply as a blank canvas.
Typically we get forms from our clients with copy, a few side notes of their ideas, and occasionally a few drawings sketched out of what they envisioned the final product to look like.
My favorite thing about layouts like these is making fun, little infographics and arranging photographs in a unique and interesting way!
There’s something about creating layouts that pulls you completely into your work. If you’re anal like I am, things have to be aligned properly, the kerning must be perfect for each body of text, and don’t forget the leading! I have a good friend in Kalispell that is also a Graphic Designer, and when she, Lisa, and myself get together, we just nerd out of this stuff like crazy. “Er my Gherd you guys! did you see that new Arvo font? And how about those slab serifs that Google Fonts just put out?” or even, “Is that company seriously using Papyrus for that banner?!”
I do have to say though, if we didn’t geek out like this on design and layouts, you wouldn’t hire us in the first place to create something wonderful for your companies and products. So feel free to call me a Geek or a Nerd any day! I take that as a compliment. It’s the ultimate term of endearment for someone like me.
LET’S TALK OTHER DESIGN
This week has been so much fun, not only because of layouts, but because I’ve also gotten to grab that sketch pad of mine that I love so much, the wonderful Pigma-Microns from my pencil cup, and draw to my little heart’s desire!
I love to draw! It sure is fun to step away from the computer for a while and rest my eyes on paper instead of on the bright, mesmerizing glow of my computer monitor for a change.
We also started on some new estimates for new and old clients that we’re extremely excited about, and that just means even more fun designs, especially drawings, will be coming out of the WheelHouse in the coming months. We’ll even be producing a lot more product photography as our infinity wall is near completion, thanks to our rad intern Niles Velin! He’s been kicking ass at this infinity wall business.
See for yourselves how much progress has been made.
And speaking of Niles, today is his last official day of his internship here at the Wheelie HQ! And…It couldn’t fall on a better day. Not only is it his birthday today, but we planned a fun little party, and our newest member of the crew, Courtney Stone, has baked a buttercream frosted cake! We all should have worn our stretchy pants today for the food fest that is about to commence.
So basically, big thank you shout out to Niles! We couldn’t have done it without you this Spring Semester. You’ve been wonderful, and we are beyond pumped about all the designs you created for the Non-Profits that we know and love (Dream Adaptive, MOPS, FoFAC). Stop by the office anytime! We miss you already.
WE HIRED SOMEONE!
Okay, so I know you guys have been waiting with much anticipation to find out who Wheelie decided to hire for the Project Manger position, and we actually already announced it earlier this week, but just in case you missed it, welcome to the crew Courtney Stone! We are so pumped to have this southern beauty working with us! She’s already fitting in with us just wonderfully.
If you’d like to learn more about Courtney, check out her blog post from earlier this week.
WHAT THE WEEKEND HOLDS FOR US
Well as it is Friday, we are already planning our great adventures for the weekend. This last weekend and week has been chalk full of mountain biking, cycling up Going-To-The-Sun road, paddle boarding on Whitefish Lake, and catching some much needed vitamin D from those sun rays we’ve been seeing so much of lately. As the clouds roll in for the weekend, we still plan to take our bikes out, run in a Zombie race, and hopefully relax and prepare for the next fun-filled week of designs.
My advice to all of you out there reading this…get outside and have some fun. Ride your bike! Riding your bike is one of the best things you can do for recreation, and it always clears my head, so I know it will yours. Cruise to Somers or Kyla on the trails, trek on over to the Whitefish Trails or Herron Park, trust me, it’s a blast!
Happy Friday Wheel Heads! See you next week.
