It's the Sunday after Thanksgiving, and I spent the afternoon in my office, smashing actual fruit slices into the scanner, determined to produce full-color scans without "too much juice glare." Life is funny, I think.
I'm scrambling to get the annual Wheelie Creative Design calendar ready to roll, and I've decided that real lime slices are crucial to its success this year. This creative spark forced me to actually enter a grocery store to buy fruit, so let's chalk that up as a win, too, while we're at it. Seriously though, I have several exciting ideas in motion and a gut feeling that 2014 is going to be big at Wheelie Creative.
It's important to listen to those feelings, especially positive intuition.
My dad once told me, "If you want to hit the ball, you have to swing the bat." We weren't playing ball when he said it, though. In fact, during my softball years, coaches usually pointed out, "You don't have to swing at the first pitch they throw at you." Instead, my dad offered this advice-via-metaphor to me when I initially became self-employed. Freelancing was difficult, and even trying to run a business was scary to me. It's one of the only pieces of advice my father has given me as an adult, and he was right-- I needed to try. I started swinging, and landed a $10,000 project almost immediately. Home freakin' run for a 23-year-old with a goggle tan.
I kept that momentum going throughout the years and established a solid, small business. I no longer consider myself a freelancer. I consider myself a small business owner. Wheelie Creative has an office in Whitefish, clients all over the nation, and a rockstar of an intern. I'm so proud of the progress, commitments, and work produced in 2013. Montana is a wonderful place to be a creative entrepreneur, and I love owning a graphic design business in Whitefish.
2014 is going to be good. More on that when the time comes, since I still have 30 days to rock the rest of this calendar year, but I have major momentum and don't plan on pumping my breaks.
Welcome to the ride.
